Ask a Vietnamese university student whether they use AI and the answer is almost always yes. Ask whether they worry it is making them lazy, or whether leaning on it feels a little like cheating, and many will admit that too. That mix of enthusiasm and unease is the honest picture of how Vietnamese students relate to AI right now.
The enthusiasm is easy to measure. According to Decision Lab's State of Consumer AI in Vietnam 2025, students lead AI adoption in the country at 92%, ahead of office workers and business owners. Vietnamese students are not behind on AI. If anything, they are the front line of it.
So the real question is not whether to use AI. That has already been decided. The question is whether Vietnamese students are learning to use it well, or just using it, because those two things are about to matter very differently. This article looks at how Vietnamese students actually use AI today, why the job market ahead rewards real skill over casual use, and how to start closing that gap.
Vietnamese Students Are the Country's Most Enthusiastic AI Users
The Decision Lab survey, run with YouGov across 600 people in July 2025, found that 78% of Vietnam's online population had used AI in the previous three months and 33% now use it daily. Among Gen Z, usage reached 86%, with 40% using it every day. Students sit at the very top of that curve at 92%.
Those numbers carry a lesson. When almost every student is using AI, simply using it is no longer an advantage. It is the baseline. What will actually separate graduates is not who uses AI and who does not, but who uses it well and who just copies the first answer that appears. A student who knows how to ask a sharp question, check whether the answer is true, and use AI to understand a topic more deeply will pull far ahead of one who treats it as a way to avoid thinking.
The Job Market Vietnamese Graduates Are Walking Into
The reason to take this seriously is what happens after graduation.
In Vietnam, AI skills are already the scarce ones. TopCV's 2025 recruitment report, based on around 300,000 job postings, found that AI Engineer is the single hardest technical role for companies to fill, with more than half of employers pointing to a shortage of high-skilled candidates as the main obstacle. The demand is real and local, not just a Silicon Valley story.
The global picture points the same way. The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 expects AI and automation to create about 170 million new roles and displace 92 million by 2030, a net gain of 78 million, while nearly 40% of the skills a job requires will change. PwC's 2025 AI Jobs Barometer found that jobs demanding AI skills pay a wage premium of 56% on average, across every industry it studied. And in the Microsoft and LinkedIn Work Trend Index 2024, 66% of leaders said they would not hire someone without AI skills, and 71% said they would rather hire a less experienced candidate who has them than a more experienced one who does not.
For a Vietnamese student, that combination is unusually favorable. The local market is short on exactly the skills you have time to build while still at university, and the global market rewards them with a clear premium.
AI Will Not Replace You, but Someone Who Uses AI Might
The common fear is that AI will take the jobs. The reality is more specific. The same reports show jobs still growing even in roles exposed to automation, and the World Economic Forum stresses that human skills like creative thinking, adaptability and resilience remain the hardest to replace.
There is a line that has become popular in tech for a reason: AI will not replace you, but a person who knows how to use AI might. Your value is not in racing a machine on speed. It is in using the machine to do more, faster, and at a higher level than you could alone. A Vietnamese marketing student who can use AI to research, draft and analyze data can produce the output that used to take a whole team.
Using AI Is Not the Same as Outsourcing Your Thinking
This is where the unease many students feel is worth listening to, because it is not baseless. Used the wrong way, AI really can make you worse.
A 2025 study from MIT Media Lab measured the brain activity of people writing essays in three groups: using ChatGPT, using a search engine, and using nothing. The ChatGPT group showed the weakest neural connectivity, something the researchers called cognitive debt. The paper is still a preprint and has not been peer reviewed, so treat it as preliminary. But the message is intuitive: if you let AI do all the thinking, you stop practicing how to think.
The line sits in how you use it. Having AI write your whole essay and submitting it steals your own chance to learn. Having AI explain a concept you do not understand, challenge your argument, or point out the holes in your draft turns it into a private tutor available at any hour. Same tool, opposite outcomes.
One skill is non-negotiable alongside it: verification. AI sometimes produces confident but wrong information, a problem known as an AI hallucination. Strong users treat every AI answer as a draft to be checked, not a fact to be trusted.
Basic Prompting Is Not Enough, Learn It Properly
Most people stop at the same level: type a question, copy the answer, done. That is the floor, not a skill, and because nearly everyone can do it, it gives no one an edge.
Look again at the numbers. The 56% wage premium and the employers who will not hire without AI skills are not paying for people who can chat with ChatGPT. They are paying for people who can build AI into how real work gets done. That is the difference between basic question and answer and using AI properly, which means:
- Understanding the tool well enough to know when to trust it and when to doubt it, rather than treating it as a black box.
- Designing a process, not just writing one prompt. The value shows up when you chain steps together, research, draft, check, refine, in a way you can repeat.
- Building small, reusable things: a simple automation, an AI assistant for one specific task, a workflow you use again and again.
- Judging the output and standing behind the result. The ability to evaluate, catch errors and be accountable for the final work is what gets paid for, not the ability to type a prompt.
For a Vietnamese student, learning at this level while still at university means you enter the job market with exactly the skills that are scarce, instead of the ones everyone already has.
Where to Start
You do not need to code or understand the math to begin. A few practical moves:
- Use it to understand, not to avoid understanding. When a concept is hard, ask AI to explain it several ways and question it back until it actually clicks.
- Learn to ask better questions. The quality of the answer depends almost entirely on the quality of the prompt, and the principles in our guide on prompting apply just as well to studying.
- Always verify. Check figures, quotes and facts against a reliable source before you use them.
- Build something real. The fastest way to learn AI is to use it on a project you actually care about, a major assignment, a content channel, a small product, where you are forced to chain steps together instead of asking one-off questions.
The goal is not to use AI to do less. It is to use it to reach work that used to be out of reach.
The Best Time to Start Is Now
AI skill is becoming a baseline capability, the way computer literacy or English were for earlier generations. The difference is speed: it went mainstream in just a few years, right while you are studying. Vietnamese students are already ahead on adoption. The opportunity now is to turn that head start into real skill before graduation, rather than arriving in the job market with the same casual habit as everyone else.
